Check out the PSP thread here for some game recommendations. I find the Final Fantasy III remake to be exceeding comfy. I'm not the kind of person who really finishes games but I got like 10 hours in and enjoyed it a lot. PSP also works very well for playing PS1 games. Check CDRomance for PSP Eboots that are all ready to go, or you can try making them yourself from PS1 isos. >is Resident Evil comfy for me, hell no. I don't find survival horror comfy in any way. It's like the opposite for me, all edgy and jumpy and shit. sometimes enjoyable and exciting but not relaxing. but I know lots of people do really like the genre. I found the intro to Silent Hill to be very /kino/ but I stopped enjoying it once it got to fighting monsters. There are lots of games you can be comfy with if you played them as a kid though. There are some mods and lcd replacements you can do though to get a backlit screen in there. The Zelda games are fun enough to be worth emulating, as are the Survival Kids games and Pocket Bomberman. The real hardware is great but it pretty much takes a backlight mod and a flashcart for the full experience. so a basic USB controller and an emulator are a much more approachable and cheap setup. >controller I recommend the 8bitDo brand of controllers, been quite happy with mine. You can also get a real controller and a USB adapter. I like the ones made by 'raphnet' brand but they are a little bit pricey.

Does anyone have any advice for getting this to run well under WINE? almost feels criminal to run a game this redpilled on an israeli spyware OS
G N U : Use kentie's DeusExe as the launcher. Grab the files then put them in the .../System subdirectory. This involves overwriting the core executable file so you should back it up first. Then on launch, set borderless full screen in the launcher settings. Your winecfg should NOT be set to 'virtual desktop'. For me this has eliminated the input lag and the game is now playable. The mouse lag problems in other modes are noticeable on the game's menu, once you get it right the menu should feel just as responsive as the rest of your DE.

adventures in Vita land Poking around at the vita. Never did too much with it but I like to check in every 12-18 months to see what's new. Unfortunately it seems retroarch snes still kinda sucks, same crap where you have a choice between snes2002 that's glitchy as hell visuals with weirdly bent sound, and snes2005 that looks nice but also has fucked up sound since it chugs all over the place. It seems like now there's a plugin to do overclocking, so maybe that will finally make 2005 playable. Aside from the main crap about the snes emulator, I've encountered a couple minor frustrations that have generally reminded me of why I've left this thing to sit in its case for so long. I popped out the memory card to put some files on, but realized it's some proprietary shit. So then I went to FTP, but got frustrated at the very bad performance. So then I managed to get USB file transfers working on linux (fuse-exfat doesn't work, have to build exfat-nofuse and run manually). but THEN I found that the files are getting silently corrupted in transit, even after updating to the latest version of Vitashell. I check the md5, transfer it to the vita, then transfer the file back to the PC and find it has a different hash. shit's fucked. Occasionally a ~30 MiB file will get through fine but anything larger than 100 MiB or so gets fucked. So I set up a dedicated wifi N router on my desk and I can now FTP reliably, but it's only averaging ~900 KiBs. Takes a full hour to put on a game . and now I'm fucking paranoid so it's going to take me a whole another hour to transfer it back so I can check the hash, since "vita homebrew checksum" isn't returning any results. fuck this gay earth

alright well I've had a few md5sum failures as well on FTP. wonder if the flash on the memory card is all fucked up? I ordered one of those SD2Vita devices in the meantime, they've now been out for a while so the hardware and software should have all the kinks worked out. In the meantime I'm going back to USB since if both USB and FTP are fucked then I might as well use the faster of the two.

okay fucking hash errors left and right. transfer a ~3 GiB game three times, get three different checksums. I bought the fucking 64 GB sony proprietary crap card and apparently those stupid nip zipperheads were too dumb to implement wear leveling correctly. it's a known issue. fuck this gay earth.

I was having some trouble after upgrading my hacked switch from 6.2.0 to 9.2.0 so I could play newer games. As the first step, I upgraded newest atmosphere when I was still on 6.2.0 . This broke every single one of my games other than retroarch and made them unable to launch. That's when I knew it was going to take more digging to deal with this bullshit. Upgrading to 9.2.0 through Choi still left everything broken, instead of fixing it. Fuck. It turns out my problems WERE caused by my tranny pozzware and changing to NEUTOS did fix it. Thanks, based NEUTOS spammer. I guess the tranny squad started putting in extra work to sabotage those evil pirates or something. Some packages show up as 'bad nca signature - possibly malicious" when you try to install them with Tinfoil. About half of what I can find online don't trip this error, I think they are clean, signed nintendo eshop nsps. For most of the recent, in-demand games I can only find packages that trip this NCA signing error, I think these are converted XCI -> NSPs. It's always a bit of an annoyance to update, which is why I try to only do it about once a year/18 months to play the accumulated new releases. The problem with dropping out of the scene and not paying attention in those 18 months can mean that you miss out on a bunch of context when it is time to upgrade though. For now I'm set since I'm on a reasonably-recent firmware now, all my old games work, and I can install new games.

I've had an NS-Atmosphere dongle for a while now, but never used it. I just got it working now for payload injection for my current setup and figured I'd share. By default this shipped with ~something~ on it, it would succeed in launching a payload but the switch would just display some error message. So I set about looking to upgrade the payload on the dongle. The website offers a download for an updater that works on Ubuntu AMD64, a nice surprise. I downloaded the file 'ns-atmosphere-programmer-ubuntu-64bit-v01.zip', extracted it, then chmod +x and ran it from terminal. It wouldn't run barfed out some bullshit message about not finding libpng12.so.0 - "libpng12.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory". Poking around in /usr/lib, it looks like I have libpng16 but not libpng12. I attempted to make a libpng12.so.0 that was a symlink to libpng16 but this didn't work. So then I found and manually installed an old version of libpng12-0 that works. links and sha256 hashes at end of post. Now that the application launched successfully, the rest was easy. I followed the instructions on the website to put the dongle into programming mode - make sure the dongle is charged up ahead of time, turn the switch to 'on', make the usb connection with my linux PC, double-press the reset button and the led turned pink. shows up in /dev/ttyACM0. Then I selected /dev/ttyACM0 in the program settings, and used the 'payload.bin' from NEUTOS. It uploaded just fine and the dongle now boots me straight into working NEUTOS. I personally don't mind using a computer to launch payloads all that much, but a dongle is much more convenient, especially if to sell it or gift it to a normal person who doesn't computer much. Pulled the switch out and downlooooooaded some new games for it. (For free cause fuck moralfags). The new pokemon actually seems alright. I was very unimpressed with the 3ds games and didn't manage to make it in more than 30 minutes before I got overwhelmed with japanese slice-of-life gayness. These new ones seem okay, like they sanded down some of the nipp shit to appease a western audience. There's a lot of minor quality-of-life improvements included, the biggest one seems to be that you basically default to having an EXP ALL in your party. I don't know if I'd pay money for this or what the online is like, but it seems fun enough for now on one-player.

Doom 64 (remaster) -I think this remaster is windows-only. The original is an N64 game. LAUNCHER BULLSHIT: Bought through Steam. Game launches without prompting another launcher or requiring another account to be created. On first launch there was a popup that asks you to create a Bethesda account but I just closed out of it no problem. Still annoying but that's CURRENT YEAR for you. HIGH FRAME RATE: Yes. This game has such simplistic graphics that it doesn't really need it, but it's there. There's an in-game setting to toggle max frame rate between 60 and 119 fps. It's overkill but it's nice and smooth, stays very crisp even when you're running and turning full speed. FIELD OF VIEW: Yes. There is a slider that seems to go from very good (seems to be ~100) all the way up to 'holy shit' (probably around 140/150 degrees). The slider defaults to the minimum setting, which I found very reasonable. I only bumped up this setting by a little bit. CONTROLLER SUPPORT: Yes. Supports my Xbox One controller just fine. Controller support is mostly why I got this, I've played the original on N64 but it's from the goldeneye age of shooters and has a similar control scheme IIRC. This remake has conventional FPS controls without vertical look. OVERALL NOTES: I'm pretty happy for the 5 bucks I spent on it. The only thing is it seems like it may be lacking the music. Typically with the dumb "Intellectual Propery" laws we have each part of a compiled work has a different copyright. fuck that shit, whatever. It's not too much of a loss since the Doom 64 soundtrack was very ambient and creepy, not really melodic like the classic Doom MIDI soundtrack. Perhaps there's some way to mod it in, or else I can just play the soundtrack with winamp or something. It's also possible it's included but is just so ambient and subdued that I didn't notice it. Overall pretty good, and this should run great on even the most potato of old laptops.

Assassin's Creed II - The PC port is windows only. Original game shipped on XB360 and PS3. LAUNCHER BULLSHIT: Ubisoft, same as Far Cry. Game can be bought and launched through Steam and it auto launchs the Ubisoft launcher then the game itself. HIGH FRAME RATE: No, locked at 62. I have seen mentions of a "glitchy unlock" around on various forums but have not been able to dig one up in the ~30 minutes I looked around for it. It's a slow-paced third person game, so locked to 60 is tolerable enough and I don't really mind for this game in particular. Way better than the ~30 with framedrops that the console versions had. I can live with it. FIELD OF VIEW: No. The view is too close and I can't find an adjustment anywhere. It's semi-tolerable as a third-person game but it's still rustling my jimmies a bit. We'll see if this ends up as a deal-breaker on the big tv or if I can get used to it. It would probably be okay on my smaller PC monitor that fills up less of my vision. XBOX CONTROLLER SUPPORT: Yes, after some fussing. This was a console release where they managed to fuck up the controller support in the porting process. Game claims to work with an X360 controller but the triggers don't work. I tried messing with some x360ce instructions I found but couldn't get it to work. The best solution I found was to use somebody's steam controller remapping to map the xbox 360 controller to the keyboard, which feels fucking retarded but it works now and seems to play just like the xb360 version did. OVERALL NOTES: It's okay. I really like sightseeing around historical Italy, so I'm willing to cut it a bit of slack. Would be nice if it ran at 120+ but it's not essential for a third-person game and I'm willing to cut it some slack seeing as how it's an older game. The main issue that I'm not sure I'll be able to get used to is the field of view.
microreviews: F.E.A.R. - on sale for $2.50 on GOG right now. Pretty good, I already feel like I got my money's worth. Minor compatibility problems, fixed with a dll and compatibility mode. Would probably pay $5 and maybe $10 for it no questions. Far Cry 1 - Paid $10 on Gog. not sure it's worth it. no nostalgia since I never played it the first go-round. maybe I'm just pleb but I can't get the stealth to work properly. It's realistic but no fun when a tiny flash of hitscan out of a guard causes him to raise the alarm. If I'm just going to rambo it up I'd rather just play Halo or something better from this time period.

F.E.A.R. Full review time. LAUNCHER BULLSHIT - purchased through G.O.G. - no launcher needed, no DRM HIGH FRAME RATE - yes. plays fine at 120 for me after fixing bug #1 below. turn off vsync in game, set nvidia settings to 'fast' vsync as usual. there's some minor glitching with enemy corpses but I think it also happens at 60 hz. FIELD OF VIEW - no adjustment, but the default is pretty good. I think it defaults to about 90-100 or so. I haven't felt the need to hunt for a mod or .ini to change it. CONTROLLER SUPPORT - no native support. I was able to make a pretty good profile with xpadder. It's gotten me through a couple of levels now and I don't think I'm going to run out of buttons. I was being stingy and mapped reload and use both to x, and only mapped 'next weapon'. I also didn't map lean left and lean right. I still have three dpad directions unmapped but it doesn't seem like I'll really need them. I also set separate horizontal and vertical look sensitivities in settings so now it feels about right. Only real annoyance is that the aim-down-sight functionality in the game is an on-off toggle instead of a hold function as is usual for COD/Battlefield type games, so it's taken a bit to rework the muscle memory. BUGFIXES AND COMPATIBILITY - 1. There's a bug where the game framerate drops dramatically after a couple of minutes of play. This is a known issue and I dropped some .dll in the game directory and it's fixed now. 2. The renderer is a little weird and gets juddery in some areas. not major, just a little annoyance. 3. I just hit a spot in the game a where my frametimes suddenly went from ~2ms to 3000ms. reloading the save from that exact point had the same 3000ms BS but loading a checkpoint a few minutes earlier got me through that corridor just fine. so, save often OVERALL: This is great.

Morrowind - GOG edition Windows only. Runs well in WINE though. Also there's OpenMW which uses the assets. LAUNCHER BULLSHIT - None. Bought on GOG. Doesn't need any account or internet crap to launch and I have an offline installer for putting it on my other computers and backing up to my NAS. HIGH FRAME RATE - I modded it with MGE XE and it does 120 fps fine now. Looks like you can set it up to 240. I don't know if vanilla was locked or not. I couldn't deal with the low FOV so I immediately modded it. 120 fps is not really necessary for such an old, slow-moving game but it still feels nice. I get occasional dips into the low 60s now that I used the 'distant land' option in MGE. I have the distance setting at "5" which is the default for the mod. It's nice to be able to see so far away but I could probably pull back on this or play around with lowering settings if I wanted to. A little 60-ish chug is okay for a game like this, it's no twitch shooter. FIELD OF VIEW - default is awful. 75 degrees horizontal at 4:3. Might be alright if you're playing on a small screen across the room but I couldn't tolerate it. No menu option, no console command, no .ini. seems the only way is to mod it. Grab the MGE XE mod. I'm at I think 100 degrees at 16:10 ratio and it feels pretty good. XBOX CONTROLLER SUPPORT - No native support. Plays pretty well with xpadder. only nitpick is navigating through item menus is pretty tedious. really miss the controller-bound shortcut for 'take all' when harvesting plants. OVERALL THOUGHTS - Pretty great. The combat system is a little annoying with the frequent misses but it's okay if you go into it knowing what to expect (use weapons you're skilled with, hold attack until fully charged, set 'use strongest attack' or pay attention to attack type). I remember the first time around I spent ages getting frustrated just clicking as fast as I could. I don't really like having to mod a game to fix it but the MGE XE mod lets you toggle on settings individually so you can just fix the field of view and/or draw distance and leave everything else vanilla, according to your preference. Nice game to wander around in.

Discussion about one of the best PC games every made. Anyone here regularly play? Modding scene is one of the best for it's age.
Can I get a q.r.d. on the series? I.E. which games are worth playing, which one to start with? I've heard of it before but didn't have a good pc at the time. Do any of these have good controller support? (I did some research and it looks like no official support, hmm). If somebody can give a first-hand account of doing a playthrough with a controller I'll consider it. not keen on the pinnacle software but I've used XPadder in the past.

Unfortunately I don't think I've heard of many people attempting it with a controller, not that it's impossible but I think it might be challenging to get it to work properly. Sorry I can't be of more help, but if you can play it with a keyboard I think you might still enjoy them if you enjoy atmospheric FPS type games.
Ok. it looks like somebody out there on the internet seems to have completed a few playthroughs with a controller. It also looks like it's on GOG, which is good. If it goes on sale at some point I'll pick it up and post a review in the PC Gaming thread.
>>569 Clear Sky is pretty bad, but it's worth playing once or twice. The swamp is pretty tedious in the start. You should get anti-bleeding artifacts ASAP (or a lot of healthkits). The finale can be easily beat by glitching it with quickloads/quicksaves after your target walks down the ladder (after quick loading, he'll go back up then down the ladder).
